Benjamin Williams Leader (Benjamin Williams Leader) was born in Worcester. He was an English landscape painter and the son of Benjamin lead-williams, the third child of famous civil engineer Edward lead-williams (1802-79) and Sarah whiting (1801-88). In 1854, at the age of 23, he was admitted to the royal college of art in London. He also exhibited some of his early works at the national academy of fine arts in Portland square from 1857 to 1858.These early works were inspired by the countryside around Worcester, "so picturesque are the cottages, cottages, alleys, hedgerows and churches". His early work was influenced by the pre-raphaelites, with an attention to detail and an emphasis on painting from nature. In his later years, he adopted a more relaxed style, more impressionistic, rather than completely imitating nature. His paintings proved to be in great demand by wealthy buyers, and within a few years of his first auction he had achieved enviable commercial success. Most of his best work is now in private galleries and has never been shown in public. His style is a middle ground between too much detail and too much elaboration, on the other hand, quick execution. His work is finished enough to satisfy those who seek to be careful, but this quality is not reduced to contrived trifles, but shows the breadth of bearing and brilliant effect through clever arrangement of light and shade. His colors are also usually pure and true to nature. His work is now on public display at the Victoria and Albert museum in London, the Tate, the huddersfield gallery, the Birmingham museum and gallery, Worcester (currently the largest UK Leader exhibition) and Manchester. Several of his works are in the Cambridge gallery in Santa monica, and are part of the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin. Many are also held by private collectors.
