Thomas William Morley was a British watercolour artist. Morley's landscapes and scenes of people life are lively and sentimental depictions of common occurrence, such as market scenes. He exhibited five works at the Royal Academy, nine at the Royal Institute (RI) and seven at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI). A Market Scene is a genre painting that depicts the market scene in Bruges, Belgium: On a sunny and warm day, a market filled with Belgians who wear simple clothing as they gather enthusiactically around market stalls. The painter mainly employed a bright, vivid tone with the brisk and rich brushwork. Meanwhile, he emphasised the contrast between light and shade, between the cold and the warmth in the picture, presenting a busy market scene full of life.
